There are thousands of WordPress themes available.
Some themes are free and some quite expensive, so how do you choose?
This website is for people who already understand the benefits of having a good quality, well coded, SEO friendly theme. After all, the Genesis Framework is considered to be the cream of the crop by many if not most web professionals.
So our choice is now much easier.
Which Genesis child theme does this site use?
To keep the cost down and to make tutorials that any Genesis user can follow, I’m using the Genesis Sample theme. But you could do something similar with many other Genesis based themes.
There are some themes that immediately spring to mind.
- Genesis Sample theme
- Altitude Pro
- Foodie Pro
Altitude Pro is a great starting point for a typical modern website. The full width stripy home page design is very popular. And making a full width stripy home page for a theme that has a fixed width or boxed style home page layout is beyond the scope of this website’s tutorials. Altitude Pro also has good looking and easy to read typography, which is essential for any successful website.
Foodie Pro on the other hand is a great place to start if you do want a fixed width, boxed style, homepage. Foodie Pro also has many built in point and click DIY design features. If you don’t want a full width stripy home page, Foodie Pro is a great theme to start with. One of Foodie Pro’s most useful DIY design options is the ability to choose from a selection of fonts and typographic settings.
What if you’re on a really tight budget and can not afford to buy a theme right now?
I highly recommend using one of the official WordPress themes. These are named after the year they are released. So the most recent official WordPress themes are…
(Please note these demo pages are hosted by WordPress.com)
That gives you a good choice of different styles. And any of these themes would make a perfectly good starter theme to use until your business or your website takes off.
If you have a different theme, can you still follow these tutorials?
Yes. The main purpose of this website is to encourage you to make simple customisation and small tweaks to an off the peg theme to match the color scheme and business card that you already have. But at least to start with, I’ll be using the free Sample theme that any Genesis user can install in the tutorials.
